What are designated substances in demolition?

3/29/2023

Designated substances are hazardous materials that are commonly found in buildings and structures and may need to be safely managed and disposed of during demolition or renovation activities. These substances are typically regulated by government agencies to protect workers, the public, and the environment from potential harm. The most common designated substances in demolition include:
  1. Asbestos: This is a fibrous material that was commonly used in building insulation, flooring, and other construction materials before its health risks were recognized. Asbestos can cause serious respiratory diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma.
  2. Lead: This is a toxic metal that was commonly used in paint, pipes, and other building materials before its health risks were recognized. Lead exposure can cause serious neurological damage, especially in children.
  3. Mercury: This is a toxic metal that was commonly used in thermometers, light bulbs, and other devices before safer alternatives were developed. Mercury exposure can cause serious neurological damage.
  4. PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls): These are synthetic chemicals that were commonly used in electrical equipment, such as transformers and capacitors, before their environmental and health risks were recognized. PCBs can cause serious health problems, including cancer and immune system damage.
  5. Silica: This is a mineral that can be found in various building materials, including concrete, brick, and sandstone. Silica exposure can cause serious respiratory diseases, including silicosis and lung cancer.
  6. Radon: This is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate in buildings and can cause lung cancer.
  7. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): These are synthetic chemicals that were commonly used as refrigerants and in other applications before their environmental and health risks were recognized. CFCs can damage the ozone layer and contribute to climate change.
It is important to identify and manage designated substances during demolition to protect workers, the public, and the environment from potential health risks.  Demolishing a building is full of issues that can have severe health and environmental impact.  It is best to call a demolition contractor if you have any questions.
